The short answer

In the full game, break sewer goo with a Pickaxe for a chance of Clay. A single patch of goo is not a guaranteed drop.

Your route at a glance

  1. Full game
  2. Pickaxe
  3. Sewer goo
  4. Clay drops
  5. Choose a station

The short route

  1. Get the Pickaxe in the full game.
  2. Revisit the goo in the sewers and break it.
  3. Keep checking other goo if the first one gives no Clay.

Loose Clay can also appear, but we do not have a dependable fixed pickup circuit to recommend.

Two different smelting jobs

The craftable camp Smelter is separate from the large existing forge used to cast keys. Do not delay the key route because you have not built a Clay station.
